Proximity alert system from Hexagon boosting site safety

When a site worker comes into proximity with a machine, or two pieces of equipment come too close, the system will provide an alert. The tag the site worker carries will resonate, showing that the person is too close to a working machine. Meanwhile, the alert system in the machine’s cab will provide a warning to the operator that a person is in the vicinity, showing distance as well as direction.

“The goal is to give the operator visibility of personnel around the machine,” explained Magnus Thibblin, president of Hexagon’s machine control division.

The system offers a range of up to 50m and, within this, can be configured by the user with close, near and far alerts to suit the type of operation. This data is recoded in the cloud and, as Brad Mullins from the firm added, “You can see on a toolbox where there are conflicts.”

Application engineer Michele Costa continued that event logging onsite is sent to the cloud and can be checked on a site map. This shows heat zones of conflicts, identifying machines or personnel and highlighting if there are issues to be resolved, such as machines working too close together or obscured sight lines that prevent personnel or machine operators from seeing each other onsite.

Similarly, for blasting operations in quarries, machines or personnel close to a planned blast can be warned in advance to ensure safety.

Conflicts can be identified over time, allowing the safety officer to resolve issues and Thibblin said that this ensures site safety can then be improved. The new system can be used on a wide range of working sites such as tunnels or urban construction areas or even quarries, where safety has to be maximised.

Putzmeister introduces zero-emissions truck-mounted concrete pump range

The range is available in 20 to 40m class sizes. The models comprise the 20m class BSF 24-4 and BSF 28-4, the 30m class BSF 36-4, as well as the 40m class BSF 42-5 and BSF 47-5.

Markus Frasch, Putzmeister’s head of product management, said the company’s patent-pending solution for integrating a plug-in hybrid in the hydraulic pump train is not just environmentally friendly, but also saves fuel, space and weight. There is virtually no limit to possible uses, as the 92kW electric motor easily covers typical applications in electric mode.

“The iONTRON makes it easy to work in an environmentally friendly manner. Simply unwind the cable, plug it in and utilise the power supply on the construction site. Switching from diesel drive to electric mode is also simple and can be done during operation. One can simply press a button to utilise the full power of the electric motor – from the support configuration right through to pumping concrete. Depending on the local electricity mix, this makes it possible to reduce emissions by up to 100%,” explained Frasch.

Environmental protection, he added, has become an important factor when tendering for construction contracts. However, investments also need to pay off for companies.

“Our iONTRON range has much to offer in this regard, including fuel savings and a delivery rate of up to 100m³/h. Putzmeister recommends that customers configure their iONTRON hybrid machine with an iLS core pump. These are particularly efficient. The improved intake behaviour achieved by removing bottlenecks in the concrete flow and the 25% lower fuel consumption, which is thanks to the innovative control system, are further advantages.”

McCloskey launches new 'powerhouse' J4 jaw crusher

The crushers are particularly suited to aggregates, construction and demolition recycling, and site preparation.

The crushing and screening equipment manufacturer says the J4 builds on the robust features of its existing product range, with a line-up of features aimed at boosting productivity and offering enhanced durability across applications.

Designed to withstand the toughest conditions, the J4 delivers high production due to its jaw chamber design and enhanced material flow, the company says. The large 1060mm x 700mm jaw opening accommodates large feed sizes, contributing to higher production in material processing.

The material path is improved with the 1064mm x 4247mm grizzly pan feeder under the hopper that allows for better sizing of material with a variety of mesh options. Options of either a short pan feeder to suit the pre-screen or a double-deck grizzly pre-screen are available, ensuring suitability and better sizing of material based on the application.

McCloskey says the J4 delivers effective stockpiling, with wide main and side conveyors for enhanced material flow. The angle-adjustable 1200mm-wide ToughFlex main conveyor features a 3.912m-high stockpile and, with quick release and ground level access, the belt is designed to be easy to maintain and service.

ToughFlex is constructed with a special weave of two fabric plies and an additional binder warp (without the need for steel wire) resulting in reduced belt weight. The plies are reinforced to resist puncturing and are protected with heavy-duty, wear-resistant top and bottom covers.

McCloskey says that portability has not been compromised with the J4, despite its powerful capabilities. Mobility on-site and between sites continues to be a feature, with remote control tracks to move and position the crusher and maximise efficiency.

The company adds that technology has been a key factor in the development of the J4, with a DSE control panel for the highest operational performance and reliability providing push-button control of the jaw, track and feeder functions. The crusher is fitted with a telematics modem for the new 365SiteConnex programme, a connectivity solution for accurate monitoring of McCloskey products.

Tunnelling technology award for Herrenknecht

The award was given for the next innovation boost in the mechanised production of tunnel infrastructure in soft ground formations with and without water-bearing layers.

Using the latest technology for continuous tunnelling results in a significant reduction in construction times for longer tunnel sections. This new development is already being used in a high-impact mobility project in Europe.

Dr-Ing E Martin Herrenknecht, founder and CEO of the firm commented, "Continuous tunnelling is the next significant innovation step in mechanised tunnelling. New underground traffic routes have to be built ever faster.

“Continuous tunnelling gives clients and contractors a decisive time advantage that ultimately benefits the entire project and all partners involved. Rail, metro and road tunnels can be built and put into operation significantly faster."

Until now, mechanised tunnelling with shield machines in soft ground has always been a stop-and-go sequential process. Each excavation stroke is followed by the ring building sequence, so that the excavation has to pause and the driving cycle only restarts when the next segmental ring has been installed. These interruptions to tunnel advance in soft ground formations cost time over longer distances.

In contrast, a continuous tunnelling process where machines continue excavation while the lining rings are being installed can contribute to considerable savings in construction time.

The new continuous tunnelling system developed by Herrenknecht can deliver an increase in efficiency during tunnel construction. In continuous tunnelling, the thrust cylinders that push the machine forward during advance take over the force share of the cylinders that are retracted for ring building.

To ensure that the machine maintains course, the centre of thrust resulting from the combined driving forces of the applied thrust cylinders must remain unchanged in its position. At the heart of continuous tunnelling is a powerful computer system and process-specific software programs that can calculate the necessary pressures in the thrust cylinders. It ensures that the machine operator controls the tunnel boring machine along the specified alignment.

In continuous advance, the machine operator no longer controls the pressures in the thrust cylinders manually using rotary controls (potentiometers) on the control panel. The Centre of Thrust (CoT) system helps the shield operator to control the machine.

The system consists of a display panel that shows the operator the current position of the centre of pressure and on which he selects the desired position of the centre of thrust. The control of the thrust cylinders is handled by algorithms in the computer system.

Compared to manual control by potentiometers, the CoT maintains the specified alignment more efficiently and effectively. The CoT system can increase total tunnelling performance by a factor of up to 1.6 compared to the previous discontinuous method, delivering a significant reduction in construction time for long tunnels.

Putzmeister drives construction sustainability with new all-electric concrete mixer

Based on a SANY electric chassis, the iONTRON eMixer is 100% electrically powered, confirms head of product management Markus Frasch. No carbon emissions are released during operation – neither during the journey nor when working on-site.

“The 315-kW e-motor offers great torque and virtually silent operation,” said Frasch. “This means that the eMixer can drive without restrictions – even in places where strict noise regulations apply. This offers a competitive advantage when tendering for construction projects with strict environmental protection stipulations.”

The 8x4 axle configuration offers up to 34tonnes permissible gross weight. Reliable performance, added Frasch, was top priority during development. Thus, the battery charge of the iONTRON eMixer lasts a whole working day in urban areas – offering about five to six trips and a range of up to 150km.

“This is made possible by the 350kWh battery technology. If more trips are planned, it can simply be opportunity-charged in between trips. The mixer recovers its full power overnight by charging at a DC charging station.”
