Gradall develops zero-emissions highway-speed excavator

“With this machine, we can dig for at least two hours and drive about 60 miles,” Michael Norman, director of sales and marketing at Gradall, said of the EL41H4. The company believes it must develop a machine that can dig for eight hours and drive back-and-forth between jobsites.

Gradall expects to reach the hour and distance targets in the next few years. “Two to three years from now, a battery of the same size will last twice as long,” Norman said.

The company will also have an essentially separate power system for digging, which will help extend operation. “There will be lots of regeneration with that as well,” Norman said.

Unlike a traditional hydraulic excavator, Gradall’s highway-speed solution features a telescopic boom mounted next to a separate cab sitting to the rear of a road-going chassis. This enables the machine to be independently dispatched to many locations throughout the workday, rather than requiring a low loader for transport.

“That’s what we do,” Norman said. “It’s, ‘One man, one machine.’”

The concept machine is powered entirely by two Volvo Penta batteries, matched to the duty cycle of the excavator, which fit neatly into the existing engine bay. The electric driveline system from Volvo Penta also includes the complete high-voltage system — electric motors, converters, junction boxes and cabling.

DEVELON, formerly Doosan, releases first electric-powered excavator

The excavator, the 2tonne DX20ZE-7, is said to offer low-noise and zero emissions – along with the features and performance enhancements that are found on the next-generation DX-7 Series of mini-excavators.

Develon was formerly known as Doosan construction equipment.

“The DX20ZE-7 is designed to meet a growing demand for electric machines,” said Thomas Lee, director of product management at Develon. “As compact equipment, such as a mini-excavator, has a higher tendency to work in cities and residential areas, where it has proximity to other workers, it has a great advantage over the diesel counterpart due to less noise and no emissions.”

Retractable tracks allow the new excavator to pass through narrow passages and entrances/exits, making it ideal for working in confined spaces or indoor applications such as demolition and construction. Once the excavator reaches the work area, the operator can expand the tracks for better stability and lifting capacity.

With its compact dimensions, the DX20ZE-7 is an excellent solution for construction and rental companies working in sensitive areas where low noise or night-time work is necessary.

The DX20ZE-7 mini-excavator is powered by an in-house-developed 20.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, with all of the electrical system and components on the machine optimised for work in harsh environments. A quick-charger system is said to restore 80% of the battery power after only one hour of charging, while the onboard charger restores maximum charge after six hours.

Telematics are standard on the mini-excavator. Operators and dealers can remotely monitor their machine’s health, location and productivity from an app or website.

Turn drone data into BIM data with DatuBIM

DatuBIM can monitor earthwork with automatic volume calculations, trace changes with each new as-built digital twin, compare design surface to the as-built, track roads build-ups and follow up on cut-and-fills over time and in different formats.

The diversity of the analytics delivered by DatuBIM, the fact that users can zoom-in to high resolution images, take measurements with ease, count materials delivered or extracted – all without the need to be on site –is a clear time and money saver, said Jad Jarroush, Datumate’s founder.

Dispersed teams can slow a project’s progress. With DatuBIM, everyone on the project has access to the right data, when and where they need it. They can add annotations and share notes on digital models, which means they can find solutions faster in the event of problems and deviations.

Datumate’s Managed Services experts will help clients with reports in the formats that they have used to date, with certified surveyor sign-off on reports; it also creates reports as needed, such as Road Layer Build-up Reports and Delta Elevation Analyses.

But one of the biggest advantages of DatuBIM is that it creates solid working relationships between stakeholders, thanks to its connection to BIM – building information modelling, said Jarroush. BIM is increasing in use and is even mandatory in some countries, making it the future for best-practice collaborative working.

Bonfiglioli becomes a solutions provider using digitalisation, big data, recording, and analysis

Massimo Palomba, product manager and key sector manager for e-mobility at Bonfiglioli, said the company’s strategy is to implement the change in the next few years.

“We already provide the drive systems and the next step for us is to provide the solution that features digitalisation, big data, recording and analysis, in order to provide predictive maintenance and so on,” Palomba added.

He said that, as part of the move to becoming a solutions provider, Bonfiglioli has developed its own sensors that can be included in the systems it sells to customers.

“The sensor will acquire the data of what the drive is doing – the torque, the temperature, speed and vibrations,” said Palomba. “The key is reading this amount of data correctly and what it means.”

Fabio Campana, product marketing director for Bonfiglioli mobile & wind industries, said the solutions provider approach has already started to be applied in the company’s mining and quarrying crushing equipment business, shredder applications, and wind turbines business, with the latter accounting for 25% of Bonfiglioli's total turnover.

Palomba added that the company plans to extend the solutions provider approach to its business in compact construction equipment.

“The journey to become a solution provider has started. It will take a while, but it is a clear target to us.”

MB Crusher launches compact one-tonne MB-HDS220 padding bucket in North America

MB Crusher says its load capacity of 0.61m3, which the Italy-based manufacturer says makes the bucket “compact, versatile, and highly manoeuvrable.” The new MB-HDS220 padding bucket should also make work easier, reduce processing time, and save on operating costs, the company says.

The size of the mouth opening is 2.2m, a width which will allow easy loading by ensuring that the tracks or wheels of the carrier machine remain clean, says MB Crusher.

The inlet is designed to convey material quickly to the rotors. MB Crusher says that maintenance is simple with greasing being centralised and done on-site … as with all its products.

The coupling system is designed to allow a maximum margin of movement of the operating machine. This system allows excellent visibility of the material to be worked on and of the site.

As with the other HDS models, the MB-HDS-220 allows the operator to change the rotors quickly and directly on-site. This makes it a versatile machine with which different types of material can be processed efficiently and quickly.

The MB-HDS-220 is designed to facilitate work on all construction sites where there is a need to aerate packed topsoil. This facility could be useful, for example, when there is a need to reclaim and clean soil from various demolition debris, stones or roots, to select material for covering pipes or trenches, or for making the bedding.

Advanced site safety systems are offered by Leica Geosystems

The package is able to identify personnel in proximity to a working machine, warning an operator and preventing collisions. Special badges that site personnel wear can be detected by the system, helping ensure their safety on a busy working construction site. The system provides degrees of alert to the machine operator, depending on the proximity of the piece of equipment to the obstruction.

Meanwhile, the system can help reduce risks of an excavator bucket striking buried utilities or overhead cables. A spokesperson for the firm said, “We can keep adding functions to it.” The package will also track any site incidents and the spokesperson added, “It’ll record all events: near misses and hits and things like that.”

Command Alkon launches Customer Portal mobile app for accurate materials tracking

Command Alkon says Customer Portal allows materials buyers to streamline their operations. The new package delivers instant, reliable data sharing and will help materials buyers create, manage, and track orders 24 hours a day.

The new app is fully integrated with the company’s COMMANDbatch, TrackIt, and Command Alkon Dispatch systems, which are called COMMANDseries, Integra, and Dispatch. The manufacturer says that the new app can also integrate with other third-party systems through open APIs.

“If materials are late, it creates a ripple effect that affects every single jobsite activity and significantly adds to project costs; the value of Customer Portal is that it answers the question ‘where’s my truck,’” said Ranjeev Teelock, chief product officer at Command Alkon.

“Ticket data shared through Customer Portal informs buyers of when the driver picks up the materials and the exact quantities that are on the way to the job. Sharing order information with customers gives them the insight that they need to improve planning and utilisation and can dramatically cut down on unnecessary phone calls – by as much as 30%.”

Sharing truck locations and ETAs provides visibility from dispatch to delivery and gives customers confidence and trust in knowing where orders are and when they will arrive, says Command Alkon.

“Field personnel can monitor inbound movement of supplies so that they don’t stack up at the gate and instead can flow easily in and out of the jobsite,” said Deepa Vangimalla, senior product owner at Command Alkon.

“If Load Assurance (formerly COMMANDassurance) is also in use and integrated with Customer Portal, there’s insight into the specification of the materials, and whether or not the load is ready to pour.”

FAE’s RCU-75 tracked carrier comes with remote control and powerful 2.4 GHz comms

The RCU-75 can mulch vegetation up to 15cm in diameter using FAE’s BL2/RCU mulcher head. This has been designed to mulch vegetation up to 153mm in diameter. Importantly, the RCU-75 can work on inclines of up to 55 degrees without fear of sideslipping. Slopes as steep as these can be a problem for lighter and less robust tracked carriers, says FAE.

Meanwhile, the heavy-duty undercarriage features a hydraulic extendable and retractable independent track gauge system and an automatic tensioning system. Thanks to high profile rubber tracks, which are 86mm pitch and 330mm in width, oscillating rollers, and triple-flange style idlers, the RCU-75 can operate in the toughest of conditions.

A dual hydrostatic transmission provides better traction and optimal management of the attachments.

This new FAE tracked carrier is powered by a Kohler Common Rail electronic fuel injection engine, a compact, powerful, and fuel-efficient 55kW propulsion system that complies with the most stringent emission standards.

Electronically-controlled piston pumps combined with a dedicated electronic control unit provide an integrated technological system. The result is high performance and reliability that lasts, plus a simple and intuitive operation.

All this makes the RCU-75 excellent for working in hilly wooded areas, near railroad tracks, power lines, gas and oil pipelines, gardens, roadsides, highways, canals, rivers, and lakes, says the Italian manufacturer.
