Motorists need heightened awareness as the approach and pass through work zones during the US National Work Zone Safety Week and after, according to ARTBA. Expect the unexpected in roadway construction work zones anytime, noted the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA). Paying attention to signs, maintaining safe following distances and signaling intentions are keys to preventing work zone crashes that kill and injure drivers, passengers, pedestrians and workers.

Stud placement just got a lot safer for road operatives in continental Europe thanks to a collaboration between the UK’s WJ Group and Belgium’s ACB. UK-based WJ Group and ACB formed their joint venture company, ACBWJ around 2006 to share product knowledge, marketing and research into thermoplastics and road markings. ACBWJ will officially launch WJ’s Guardian stud placement vehicle into the European market at the Intertraffic exhibition in Amsterdam from March 20-23.

Cats eyes, which light up in response to changing traffic lights, will be used for the first time in the UK at a motorway junction. Highways England, the government agency, is installing around 170 of the LED road studs at Switch Island, one of England’s busiest motorway junctions – used by over 90,000 vehicles every day. Installation is expected to take around a year to complete.

UK contractor Amey said it has successfully conducted trials of wearable biometric and location device safety technology that could reduce risks to drivers and lone workers. The technology was provided by Fujitsu. It included a collar drowsiness detector and ear clip, measuring changes in blood flow which are indicators of attention loss and an initial sign of fatigue. The small units detect when the body is under stress and help workers raise instant alarms at the touch of a button.

Ennis-Flint, a US global manufacturer and supplier of pavement marking materials, has acquired American Traffic Products. ATP, based in Rialto, California, makes traffic paints and thermoplastics. In addition to its Rialto facility, ATP has a Paris, Kentucky manufacturing facility and several regional warehouses.
