Three road tunnels have been proposed as part of a highway project by the Myanmar Government. The tunnels would run through the Wa Ta Lone Mountain, Khauk Nwe Mountain 1 and Khauk New Mountain 2 in the Shan Mountains. Singapore’s road safety statistics continue to improve as the number of road crash deaths dropped to a record low in 2017. There were 141 road deaths in Singapore in 2016, while road deaths in 2017 fell to just 122. This is the lowest level of road fatalities for Singapore since 1981. Bangladesh is in desperate need of road repairs, with insufficient funding exacerbating the problem. This comes from a new survey carried out by Bangladesh's Roads and Highways Department (RHD). The results of the survey suggest that the country needs some US$2.55 billion to be spent on repairing and maintaining the country's roads over the next five years. Work is starting on an upgrade for a 100km stretch of road in Zambia. The route connects Nchelenge and Chiengi districts and will benefit from a new asphalt surface. The project is costing US$77 million and is being carried out by the contractor Sinohydro Zambia. Delays to the work have been caused by heavy rains however. The Zambian Government has paid an initial $3.8 million for the work to be carried out and the project is expected to take two years to complete.

Vietnam is considering a major tunnel construction project that would boost connectivity. The project would be for a 1.3km tunnel running underneath the sea at Vietnam’s Cua Luc Bay. This would boost transport for Quang Ninh city and has an estimated project cost of around US$346.5 million.

Brazilian road concession company Arteris is interested in acquiring a number of assets from Odebrecht Transport (OTP). The two road concessions currently managed by OTP that Arteris is showing interest in are the 851km Rota do Oeste network in Mato Grosso and the 297km Rota das Bandeiras road network in Sao Paulo. The European Commission has given the go-ahead for an acquisition of Spanish highway firm Abertis by German construction company Hochtief.
