A contract for consultancy work on the Saudi Arabia to Bahrain causeway project has been awarded. This US$8.9 million contract is being handled by a consortium comprising AECOM, KPGM and CMS, as well as a number of other specialist firms. This team will work on the financing model for the project, as well as the design of the link. Building the new link is expected to cost around $3.5 billion and it will run parallel with the existing King Fahd Causeway. The original causeway opened to traffic in 1986 but traffic volumes have increased considerably over the decades and the new link is required so as to prevent congestion and delays. The new causeway will carry road and rail traffic and will be 25km in length, as with the existing structure.
