The city of Mumbai officially has the worst record for road safety in India. During 2015, 586 people were killed in road crashes in the city, while a further 2,034 suffered serious injuries and there were 23,468 recorded crashes. Official statistics for 2016 have yet to be revealed but it is hoped that some of the city’s recent traffic measures will help reduce the toll. Major new road and bridge projects underway in India
A series of major road and bridge projects is now underway in India. One of the most notable is the US$500 million project to build a new bridge spanning the River Ganges, which will be the longest in the country. India Bogibeel Bridge project

India’s high road deaths require change
India’s road deaths are providing a wider cause for concern. Official data pegs the road fatality rate for the country at over 146,000 in 2015, an increase over the 139,671 recorded in 2014. India’s highway financing programme planned
A budget of US$8.97 billion has been set as the limit on borrowing for India’s highways development programme for the 2017-2018 fiscal year. The financing agreement has been made by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), acting through the country’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. This substantial budget comes in spite of fewer projects being awarded as well as less financing having been secured during 2016. In the April to October 2016 the NHAI awarded contracts for 2,330km of highways.

India road safety aim to save lives
A study produced by the United Nations reveals the high risk of motorcycling in India. In 2015 the country had 36,800 motorcyclists killed on its roads, with a further 93,400 being injured. However the UN’s study reveals that the fatality rate for India’s motorcyclists could be cut by as much as 42%, if helmet wearing was mandatory. Nepal road upgrades being planned
A series of infrastructure upgrades are planned for Nepal that will help improve its economic development. A key infrastructure requirement for Nepal is the development of its road network. In a move to tackle the issue, Nepal’s Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has initiated the strategy for the development of roads in all 75 districts by 2022.
About US$7.5 billion has been estimated as being required for the completion of this project. Funding will require financing from internal sources
Construction machine sales strengthening in Italy
Construction machine sales are strengthening around the globe. A report from the SaMoTer-Veronafiere Outlook reveals that 7,551 construction machines were sold in Italy over the period from January-September 2016. This represents a gain of 32% from the same period in 2015 and a further increase of 37% is estimated in Italy for the two-year period 2017-2018.

India approves 12 highway projects including in Goa and Nagaland
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of India has announced the approval of 12 highway projects valued at nearly US$908 million.
Projects are in the states of West Bengal, Maharashtra, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Goa, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
The project in West Bengal entails the four-laning of the Haldia from Kolaghat section of NH-41 in addition to the upgrade and rehabilitation of the Barhani-Kataya Chowk near the Shohratgarh section of NH-730.

Road development for India’s Karnataka State
A series of road development projects will now move ahead in India’s Karnataka State. Some US$536.51 million is being budgeted by the Union Surface Transport Ministry. This includes funding for road projects in the twin cities of Dharwad and Hubballi. The funds will be used to surface six main roads in Dharwad, 13 main roads in Hubballi and nine roads in Dharwad and Hubballi.
Bihar crossing for Ganges River
A loan facility from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will help fund work on the project to construct a new bridge over the River Ganges in India’s Bihar State. Because of the width of the river at this point, the bridge will be close to 10km in length, making it the longest in India.
