Because of the width of the river at this point, the bridge will be close to 10km in length, making it the longest in India. The new bridge will improve transport connections between the north and south of the state and the project is expected to cost around US$500 million. Building the bridge will help develop transport and trade in the area, as well as providing an important link for India as a whole.
The new bridge will link the existing NH-30 and NH-103 routes and will be situated close to the city of Patna. A joint venture formed of Indian firm L&T and South Korean company Daewoo E&C won a contract earlier this year from Bihar State Road Development Corporation to work on the project. Final design details have yet to be announced but the early plans were for the bridge to be a cable stayed structure featuring six lanes. The project also includes building around 22km of roads as well as railway crossings and viaduct sections and is expected to take four years to complete.
