Thailand’s poor road safety standards are once more being highighted, following a spate of road deaths during the recent holiday period. By the fourth day of Thailand’s one-week New Year’s holiday travel period, the country had already seen 239 road deaths from 2,308 crashes. There were also around 2,500 people injured in crashes in this time. The highest road death tolls during the period were seen in Ubon Ratchathani and Si Sa Ket. Meanwhile Chiang Mai experienced 86 crashes, the highest level of incident

The New Zealand Government is setting out plans to try to boost road safety during 2018. This follows a disappointing safety record on the country’s roads in 2017. There were 380 people killed on New Zealand’s road network during 2017, the highest figure since 2009. In a bid to boost safety, the New Zealand Government has set a budget of US$16.5 million (NZ$22.5 million) to tackle safety issues on the stretches of rural roads identified as having the highest risk to users.

The eastern Chinese city of Jinan has opened a 1km solar roadway section of an expressway, according to the government’s Xinhua news agency. However, only four days after the road section was opened, thieves stole a small section of the panels that cover nearly 5,900m². Qilu Transportation Development Group, the project developer, said the road’s panels can generate 1 million kWh of power each year, enough to meet the everyday demand of around 800 households. Taiwan’s road safety is a focus for concern, given the high number of crashes on the country’s network. The National Road Traffic Safety Commission of Taiwan has estimated that there were over 400,000 deaths and serious injuries on the country’s road network in 2017. This compares with a figure of 375,000 for 2013.

Paraguay increased its spending on road repairs during 2017. The country’s Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) spent around US$800 million on road repairs and maintenance during the first 11 months of 2017. The country aims to increase its budget for 2018 to $1 billion. The development work will see Paraguay increase its total network of surfaced roads from 5,000km to 7,650km by the time the current administration finishes its term in office.

Colombia is moving ahead with its 4G programme, as nine of the 30 key projects in the road development scheme now financially secured. The remaining 21 projects are now being built, while 25 of the projects from the 1G, 2G and 3G schemes are already in use, having expanded Colombia’s network by a total of 3,743km. Parsons will handle the design work for a new bridge in Indiana carrying the SR 249 route. The bridge will replace an ageing structure carrying George Nelson Drive across the US 12 Dunes Highway, as well as two rail lines at the town of Portage. The design-bid-build project was awarded by the Indiana Department of Transportation.
