A new bridge is being planned for the area around Australia’s capital, Canberra. A contract to build the Molonglo river bridge has been awarded to the firm BMD Construction.

Building the bridge is expected to cost US$119.3 million (A$172.7 million). The work has been delayed and is due to start in 2024 and should still be ready for use by 2025. The project has been delayed and has been the topic of much debate in the area. The construction work will provide additional facilities for buses as well as private cars and the work is expected to reduce congestion and journey times.

The work is being funded jointly by the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and the Australian Federal Governments on an equal basis.
