Dominican Republic pushes ahead with four ring roads for 2019

The Dominican Republic has earmarked nearly US$122 million next year for construction of four ring roads.

The roads will be in Santo Domingo, Azua, San Francisco de Macoris and Bani.

According to a report in the Dominican Today newspaper in September, the Dominican Republic ranks 56 among 137 countries on the quality of its streets, avenues and highways.

In Latin America, the country is behind Ecuador, Nicaragua, Mexico, Panama and Chile, However, the country’s roads are rated better than those in El Salvador, Honduras, Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Paraguay and Haiti.

The 3019 World Economic Forum study polled 14,000 business and other leaders on the quality of the roads in their countries, and according to a 1-to-7 scoring. A number 1 rating corresponds to roads in extremely poor conditions and a 7 rating confirms roads in extremely good condition. The Dominican Republic had an overall rating of 4.3, according to the newspaper report.

Globally, the top five places went to the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Switzerland, Hong Kong and the Netherlands.
