BOMAG plans to launch the new 4.5 tonnes BW138AD-5 tandem roller at the beginning of 2012
Road machinery specialist 172 Bomag has carried out a two day demonstration event at its headquarters in Boppard, Germany. Part of the French firm 217 Fayat, the company displayed its product range for the asphalt road construction sector and demonstrated the capabilities of its machines when working on a variety of jobs.
Around 200 customers from Europe, the Middle East and Africa were shown BOMAG innovations and the latest technologies, as well as those from other companies in the FAYAT Group such as asphalt mixing plants and bitumen spreaders.
Beginning with the production of asphalt mixes, energy-efficient technologies for hot mixes and the use of recycled material were shown, including the innovative Top Tower Concept for outputs under 200 tonnes/hour.
Attention then turned to milling, paving and the compaction of asphalt. The performance of BOMAG's product range was demonstrated in an array of applications.
The presentation was concluded with an overview of BOMAG's extensive range of services, one of the highlights being online data feedback for fleets of machines, including those from other manufacturers, using BOMAG TELEMATIC. This fleet management programme provides position tracking, reports on capacity utilisation and efficiency, and maintenance scheduling.
Typical applications were demonstrated on the BOMAG demo areas. Customers were shown various machines; the BM500/15 compact planer, the new series of small tandem rollers, the new 4.5tonne BW138AD-5 tandem roller, the new BF800 finisher, and the BCM-Net, for online networking of a construction site by means of WLAN connection between several asphalt rollers. The BM1500/15 was shown planing damaged areas up to 210mm deep and the asphalt surface layer was then laid by the BOMAG BF300P finisher and compacted. At another location, a 100mm asphalt base course was laid using a BF800. To compact 10m paving widths using the BOMAG BF800 finisher, two large tandem rollers worked in parallel, the 10tonne BW174AP-AM pivot-steered tandem roller and the 10tonne articulated BW154 AD-AM. Both rollers were equipped with the BOMAG ASPHALT MANAGER II, which tracks the stiffness of asphalt during compaction. Vibration is automatically controlled so that the optimum forces are applied without material being crushed.
With several rollers in use, co-ordination is crucial for high quality results. BOMAG’s solution is the BCM Net and tandem rollers are equipped with GPS receivers and connected through a WLAN network. They transmit their positions, the compaction values and the asphalt temperature to the server. This enables every roller operator to follow his compaction progress and that of the other rollers.
