A new US$1.25 billion underpass project is intended to help deal with the chronic traffic congestion suffered in Algeria’s key port city, Oran. The underpass will run underneath the Pépinière roundabout, on the eastern side of Oran.

The tendering process for the project is commencing. The project is being overseen by Oran’s public works department. The aim of the work is to improve journey times as the roundabout suffers amongst the worst congestion of any part of Oran’s network.

The busy N11 route passes through the roundabout, which also connects with the Rue 5 Juillet and the W32 roads. Traffic is particularly heavy at peak periods and delays are frequent. The underpass will allow drivers using the N11 to bypass the roundabout, improving traffic flow.

Heavy trucks travelling to and from the port use the N11 and the underpass will also help commercial transport. The project follows after work for the new $369 million link connecting Oran to the East-West Highway. This new road will provide a connection between the East-West Highway and the Oran Slip Road.
