Improvement works for Peru’s Route 22 Central Highway will now commence in 2023. The project will see the highway being widened so that it features two lanes in either direction, rather than one lane in either direction at present.

The 136km highway runs from the capital, Lima, to Central Peru. Its construction was started back in 1924 and the original road link was completed in 1934. However, the highway is no longer able to manage the current traffic demands.

The widening work will boost capacity and also help to improve safety for drivers along the route. Included in the project will be the construction of 54 new bridges and 94 viaducts. Tunnel sections will also be built to avoid crossing mountain tops. Completion of the work is scheduled for 2025.
