The authorities in the Peruvian city of Lima are planning the construction of a tunnel to connect with Huancayo. A budget of US$1.86 million has been set to pay for a feasibility study into the project. The 31km Trans-Andean tunnel would run from Morococha in Junin to San Mateo in Lima and would be at an altitude of 2,000m. The tunnel would carry both vehicles and trains.
With the construction of the tunnel, journey times between Lima and Huancayo would be cut to four hours. The tunnel would also connect Lima to Cerro de Pasco and reduce journey times between the two to three and a half hours, as well as reducing the journey time to La Oroya to two hours. Construction of the tunnel itself is expected to cost a total of $4 billion.
