Contractor Ringway has completed work on a tricky project to replace Stile Farm Bridge, which crosses the Great Stour River near Chilham in County Kent, south-east England. Built in the 1920s, the bridge was in a severe state of disrepair resulting in weight restrictions of just 3tonnes. The Holzmatttal Bridge for the A98 autobahn in southern Germany stretches 410m across the valley, and on this build the newly-developed Doka forming carriage TU is said to have demonstrated precisely how it drives progress with extremely short cycle times and speedy forming and stripping out operations. The underslung carriage also permits unobstructed access for site traffic.

Geotechnical specialists, Bachy Soletanche and Carillion Piling are currently working on an £18 million (e21 million) geotechnical contract as part of carriageway improvements on the M1 motorway to the north of London, England. The work between junctions 10-13, Luton to Milton Keynes, is being carried out for the Costain Carillion joint venture working on behalf of the Highways Agency. Plans are in hand for a new bridge to replace the Gerald Desmond Bridge at the Port of Long Beach in California. The existing structure is not able to cope with anticipated increases in vehicle traffic volumes and is also too low for new generation of cargo ships to pass underneath.

Allerton Steel, on behalf of R J McLeod, has fabricated the steelwork for a replacement bridge at Loch Ba on Rannoch Moor in the Highlands as part of its A82 upgrade scheme for Transport Scotland. R J McLeod is the civil contractor on the £2.2 million (E2.6 million) scheme which replaces the existing three-span reinforced concrete bridge.
