A highway widening project worth US$4.3 billion is planned for northern Taiwan. The 44km stretch of National Freeway No1 from Yangmei to Toufen will be improved with the addition of extra lanes. Included in the work will be the construction of a tunnel section.

The project is being overseen by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. The feasibility study into the project was approved in May 2020, with the environmental impact assessment having been completed in mid-2023 and construction approved in December 2023. The work should be ready for use in 2033.
