Plans are in hand for upgrades to the existing ring road around Nepal's capital Kathmandu. This 28km route will be widened to cope with the growing traffic volumes and high congestion levels seen at present and the work is expected to cost US$55 million.
New Zealand's Government is now setting budgets for transport improvements. In Auckland transport projects look set to commence following a design agreement worth US$10.52 million. This will be for the $937 million eastern suburban transport projects package.
Construction of Tunisia's new north-south highway will start shortly. The 152km highway will link Sfax and Gabès and the construction schedule calls for the building of underpasses, flyovers, interchanges, tollgates and 10 bridges.
A major award for outstanding highway work has been given for the I-279/SR28 connector ramp project. The project design team was recently given the 2009 Outstanding Highway Project Award by the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE).

Work is now underway on the new DFW Connector near Dallas, in the US state of Texas. This is of note as it is the largest investment of Recovery Act (ARRA) investment in a highway project so far.
Japan's Transport Ministry is working on plans to remove toll charges for passenger cars using 1,626km of the country's expressways. The move is be used as a trial to evaluate benefits to the economy as well as on transportation businesses and traffic congestion.
Work is due to start on the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEx) in the Philippines in March 2010. The new highway will cut travel time and help boost economic development in and around Luzon.
