Morocco is planning a road maintenance programme aimed at tackling excessive wear and tear to the country’s network. A budget of over US$211 million has been set for the work, which will focus on key stretches of the road network that are currently in poor condition.

The country is also intending to improve road safety on its network in a bid to lower the casualty rate. The aim of this safety plan is to lower the country’s road death rate by 20% by 2020. Although previous road safety measures have had a positive effect in cutting road deaths, these improvements have been minimal in the last two years. Road deaths in urban areas have actually increased 8.4% in the last two years, although there has been a small reduction in the casualty rate overall in this period.
