The Government of Côte d'Ivoire is taking steps to improve the country’s road network, which has deteriorated due to lack of maintenance. The programme of works calls for 40,000km of rural roads to be repaired in the 2019-2020 period. Improving rural roads will boost connectivity to many economically-deprived villages and the work is intended to boost trade both to and from these locations. Transport can be badly affected during the rainy season in particular, when unsurfaced roads can become nearly impassable.. The programme of works is being financed by the country’s road maintenance fund. New drainage will be installed on some links to minimise flooding and some unsurfaced roads will be paved while other unsurfaced roads will be at least graded and compacted to remove potholes.
