A road in China’s Gansu Province became blocked following a period of heavy rain. A landslide on a grass slope at a tunnel portal on National Highway 212 recently caused major traffic delays in the area. The task of clearing up the landslide was made more difficult still by around 500m3 of stone close to the tunnel portal also being moved by the landslide. Another route in the area that carries tourist traffic was also affected by landslides, a major road in Longnanwen County.

A request for emergency assistance was sent out from the management departments of the two road sections. The Longnanwen county highway management department initiated its emergency rescue plan, quickly mobilising large items of construction equipment and personnel to move to the scene of the blockages. Construction machines from XCMG were brought to the area and began moving away the material causing the blockages at two key points.

The use of the XCMG wheeled loaders ensured that the two busy routes could be reopened to traffic in a short space of time. Just two hours were required to reopen the blockage at the tunnel portal on National Highway 212. The landslide on the Longnanwen County road was cleared even more quickly, taking just one hour once the equipment had started work onsite. The damage to the slopes caused by the landslide was also repaired and these routes are now far less likely to suffer blockages in the future at these specific points.
