The Malaysian Government is prioritising spending on transport infrastructure development. Malaysia’s massive infrastructure spending is being distributed across different transport modes including road, air, rail and public transit.

One of the key projects underway in Malaysia is for the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway. Tendering will open for 19 stretches of the Pan Borneo Highway in Sabah during November 2023. Construction of this 336km stretch, Phae 1B, is expected to cost US$3.5 billion. Meanwhile, the stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway in Sarawak is due for completion in 2024.

Funding is also being provided in the form of subsidies to operators running bus services in rural areas with low passenger numbers. This forms part of the Stage Bus Transformation Programme.
