In Chile the authorities are setting out plans for a new programme designed to provide alert warnings for urban roads requiring repair. Chile invests some US$1.5 billion/year repairing roads in and around capital Santiago at present and the country's government believes that tackling maintenance issues early would significantly reduce costs. The new scheme will involve a consultancy firm to implement the new wear analysis programme. This firm will also set out an action plan and provide an estimate of the cost of works, with the scheme intended to go live in late 2011 or early 2012.
