STRABAG is carrying out further works for the S19 route in Poland
STRABAG is continuing with its upgrade of the S19 expressway in Poland with the award of work for another stretch of the route. The €85.5 million contract is for a 14km-long section and the firm will carry out the design-and-build work on the stretch.

The S19 route is important for Poland as it forms part of the European north-south transport route known as the Via Carpatia, which connects Klaipėda in Lithuania and Thessaloniki in Greece. The contract was awarded by Poland’s General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA).

The contract will be handled over a period of 42 months in two separate stages. The work involves building 7.5km of new roadway as well as a further 6.2km upgrade of the right-hand carriageway of the Międzyrzec Podlaski bypass.

The construction includes the renewal of two exits and six civil engineering structures, including several passages for wildlife, two rest areas and additional technical infrastructure and facilities for environmental protection. Along the Międzyrzec Podlaski bypass section, which is being widened with an additional lane, the contract includes the construction of a railway overpass as well as noise barriers.

STRABAG has already carried out work on 41 km of Via Carpatia. “The Via Carpatia motorway network is an important north-south link in Europe from the Baltic to the Mediterranean Sea. STRABAG has played a major role in the construction so far,” commented Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE.

The company has built 41km of the route between Lublin and Rzeszów, which opened to traffic at the end of 2021. In addition, contracts were also signed for three sections of the S19 for a total of 38 km during 2021.
