Built in the period from 1949 to 1955, the tolled highway now incorporates I-76, I-80 and I-90, although it actually predates the construction of the US Interstate highway system. As a result the route is one of the oldest highway stretches in the US, which is why it has been in such need of improvement. Work being carried out includes resurfacing, widening and the replacement of bridges.
