A new bridge project in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City will help cut traffic congestion. The project is expected to cost in the region of US$157 million and four contractors will work on the construction of the 3.2km long Bình Tiên Bridge. The plans call for the bridge to carry four traffic lanes and be from 30-40m wide, although the design has yet to be finalised. The work will be carried out in two separate sections, while the client for the Bình Tiên Bridge and Road project is Ho Chi Minh’s Transport Department. When complete in 2020 the new bridge will connect District 6’s Phạm Văn Chí Street and East-West Avenue with District 8’s Tàu Hủ and Đôi canals and Bình Chánh District’s Nguyễn Văn Linh Street. The project was originally approved in 2010 but has been delayed due to the complexity in handling the necessary land requisitions.
One of the sections will be from Phạm Văn Chí Street in District 6 to Tạ Quang Bửu Street in District 8. The construction work is being carried out by the local firms DMK Company and 319 Corporation in a build-transfer contract worth $117 million. As part of the package, the contractors will be given plots of land in part payment that will be worth 40% of the investment capital, with the remaining 60% coming from the state budget. In addition the two firms will have the use of a number of plots of land in wards 6, 14 and 15 of District 8.
The second section of the project will run from Tạ Quang Bửu Street in District 8 to Nguyễn Văn Linh Street in Bình Chánh District. This part of the construction work will be handled by the contractors Licogi 16 Joint-Stock Company and BCCI Company and will be worth $40 million. As with the other contract, these two firms will also be given land along Bình Tiên Bridge and Road as well as number of other land plots.
Once the new bridge is open, it will help lower congestion at peak periods in the city. The existing National Highway 50 and the Chà Và, Nhị Thiên Đường and Y bridges carry traffic at present but the city’s increasing vehicle numbers mean the new bridge is desperately needed.
