Around US$1.1 billion of road repairs such as pothole filling or resurfacing work is required to bring the network back up to scratch. Johannesburg has a road network of around 13,600km and in the 2017-2018 period, the city authorities managed to repair around 44,350 potholes. The city has a backlog of 10 years of road improvement works, with $608 million needed to repair the surfaced roads and $402 million needed to improve and surface the gravel roads.
