Work is now starting on a new highway widening project in Azerbaijan. The project will upgrade the road connecting capital Baku with the cities of Shamakhi and Yevlakh. The improvement works call for the route to be widened from a single lane in either direction at present to a new route with two lanes in either direction. The work is intended to boost both capacity and safety along the route. The project also includes building two bridge sections and the work is due for completion by 2020. Although the project is intended primarily to boost transport within Azerbaijan, it will also improve connections with neighbouring Armenia and Georgia, reducing journey times to the respective capitals of Yerevan and Tbilisi.
