In India the authorities are approving a further four new highway projects. These will be worth nearly US$535 million in total. The highways are located in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Gujarat and the work involves widening and improving the existing NH34 in West Bengal as well as widening a 123km section of the link from Jetpur-Somnath in Gujarat. Both of these upgraded sections will be widened with two lanes in either direction.

India intends to continue its massive investment in highway spending. Predictions for the next five years say that up to US$100 billion will be spent on road building in the country in the coming five years. The Ministry for Road Transport and Highways plans to build 35,000km of highways, with 60% being provided by the Government budget and 40% from the private sector. India’s horrific death toll on its roads presents a major threat to the country’s fast economic development. Estimates from the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) suggest that some 130,000 people die on the roads/year, at an average of around 14 deaths/hour. Under-reporting of accidents is thought to be endemic and the figures available exclude the 1.6 million serious injuries that have been estimated by the IRTE. The Tamil Nadu state government in southern India aims to build a 162km-road connecting Chennai suburb Ennore and the town of Mamallapuram. State chief minister Jayaram Jayalalithaa said a detailed report on the US$266.62million peripheral road project will be carried out soon. Meanwhile, the state government said it intends to upgrade all 78.6kms of existing roads, while another 83.2km of roads will also be laid soon.

The INTERMAT 2012 equipment exhibition in Paris looks to be a strong event, with 90% of the space already sold for the show. Positive growth is forecast, with worldwide growth in the construction machinery and equipment sector. Some 3,411km of highways in India’s Karnataka State will be upgraded over the next three years. The state authorities have given approval to the work, which is expected to cost up to US$420 million. Funding will be provided jointly by the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. The authorities have set a target for the construction of 20km/day of highway by 2013 and 2014. The German manufacturers association, VDMA, has compiled data suggesting that following the slump in construction equipment sales in 2009, the market will recover in 2010. The VDMA reports that in 2009 German construction equipment sales fell in by some 43% to €9.5 billion. Dr Christof Kemmann, VDMA chairman said at a recent board meeting of the organisation, “...2009 has been the most difficult year ever for our industry.”
