The tender process is still underway for three sections of the new super highway project to connect Nagpur and Mumbai in India. Meanwhile 10 of the contracts for the Nagpur-Mumbai Super Communication Expressway (NMSCE) have now been awarded. The NMSCE highway project will provide an improved transport link between Nagpur and Mumbai, which are around 690km apart. The NMSCE highway is expected to cost a total of US$6.8 billion to construct.

In Rwanda, a US$66 million deal has been signed for construction work on a road running from Base and through Butaro to Kidaho. The 63km stretch road is intended to improve transport connections in the north of the country. The work on this road will boost the country’s connections with neighbouring Uganda, helping develop trade and transport between the two nations.

At last some good news about plastic waste: road authorities around the world are starting to use it in their roads - Kristina Smith reports.

A US$452 million highway upgrade project will be carried out in India by the contractor, Ashoka Mallasandra Karadi Road. This firm is a subsidiary of Indian company Dilip Buildcon. The work involves upgrading a section of the existing NH206 route and widening it so that it features two lanes in either direction. The highway stretch being worked on is from Shivamogga to Tumkur. The contract was awarded by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

A loan package from the World Bank will help pay for a major rural road programme in India. The US$210 million loan is being used for rural road development in Madhya Pradesh State. The upgrade work will see a total of 10,000km of gravels roads in Madhya Pradesh State being surfaced with asphalt, while a further 510km of new rural roads will be built in the state and will be surfaced with asphalt. This will be for the Madhya Pradesh Rural Connectivity Project.

Off-highway tyre manufacturer BKT has entered into a joint research agreement with Kultevat, a leading US bio-tech company specialising in the cultivation and processing of TKS dandelion as a renewable and sustainable alternative to natural rubber. The agreement will explore the wider use of TKS dandelion, a species of dandelion native to Kazakhstan. India’s Road Transport and Highways Ministry is working on plans for a new high speed road link connecting the capital, New Delhi, with the key economic and industrial centre, Mumbai. The route will form part of the country’s new highway network and is expected to cost in the order of US$15.3 billion to construct. India’s Madhya Pradesh State is planning to improve connectivity to rural areas with a plan to improve rural roads. Funding for the work is being provided through a loan sourced from the Chinese Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). The loan is worth some US$140 million and will help pay for surfacing work to existing gravel roads and dirt roads. In addition, a road safety programme will be instituted across the state, using a portion of the loan.
