Deutz has revealed a 40% increase in its new orders during Q1 2013 compared to the previous trading quarter. The Cologne, Germany-based diesel engine manufacturing giant said the significant new order rise represented a continuation of an encouraging trend that emerged in Q4 2012. New orders for Deutz were worth €388.5 million in the first quarter of 2013, compared to new orders valued at €276.6 million in Q4 2012. The new order value for Q1 2013 was also in line with the €390 million reported for Q1 2012.

The Chinese equipment manufacturer Shantui intends to capitalise on the strength of demand for machines in the Russian market by focussing on the upcoming CTT show in Moscow. An estimated 34,080 people died in road accidents in the United States in 2012, up 5.3% on the year before, according to a new report from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The reported deaths figure is the highest since 2008. In 2012, the US NHTSA said the fatality rate or the number of people killed for every 100 million vehicle miles travelled was 1.16, compared to 1.1 in 2011.

Spanish infrastructure operator Abertis is reportedly interested in participating in new motorway projects valued around US$20.9 billion (BRL 42bn) planned by the Brazilian government. However, Abertis said its main interest remained in short-term investment projects which will be connected to its own motorways. Hyundai Heavy Industries has completed its first construction equipment factory in Brazil. Europe’s cross-border police body TISPOL reports positive results from the recent pan-European seatbelt enforcement drive. The data shows that over 100,000 drivers and passengers were detected for not wearing seatbelts. A total of 24 countries took part in the operation, which was co-ordinated by TISPOL. A report on road accident victims compiled by the Spanish breakdown recovery service Real Automovil Club de Espana (RACE) and tyres manufacturer Goodyear claims that pedestrians will always die if run over by a vehicle speeding at 70km/h. The report states that at 40km/h, the risk of pedestrian death after being run over is of 22%; with the death rate rising to 71% at 50km/h, and 95% at 60km/h.
