Liberia is considering a World Bank offer of a US$500 million loan for more road projects, according media reports. Information Minister Eugene Nagbe said the government is also talking to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the African Development Bank as part of plans to use the loan for highway construction. Data from the Zambian Police shows that 25 people were killed in road crashes during the recent holiday period from 3rd August to 7th August. The Russian construction firm Sibmost is to handle contract to build a stretch of the M5 Highway in the Republic of Bashkortostan (Volga). The deal is worth US$102.2 million and is for a 16km section of the highway. India’s Uttar Pradesh State has awarded a consultancy contract for two expressway projects. The two new routes are for the 150km Prayag Link Expressway and the 88.5km Gorakhpur Link Expressway. The consultancy contract will be carried out by KITCO, a state-owned company. Both expressways are to be built with two lanes in either direction, although the designs of both will allow for an additional lane in either direction at a later point in time if required by traffic demand.

A firm in Canada claims it has the answer to questions over the sustainability of concrete as a construction material. Construction of the second tube of the Karawanks Tunnel connecting Austria and Slovenia is now going ahead. The work will be headed by Austrian contractors, ARGE Swietelsky Tunnelbau and Swietelsky Baugesellschaft. The 7.8km-long tunnel route runs under the Alpine Karawanks mountain range. Funding from Japan will help pay for a major tunnel project in Nepal. The work is expected to cost close to US$200 million and includes building two tunnel stretches. The project was first put forward in 2010 and work is now intended to commence in 2020, with its completion scheduled for 2023. The tunnel sections will be built in the area close to Bhaktapur, which lies to the east of capital Kathmandu.
