Plans are well underway in Myanmar for a new bridge connecting Thanlyin and Yangon. The project is expected to be complete by 2022 and is expected to cost US$302 million. The link will be tolled and will carry an estimated 5,000 vehicles/day when it opens to traffic. A loan facility from Japan is expected to pay for the majority of the project. An international contractor will carry out the main portion of the project, although sub-contracting will be carried out by local firms.

The latest equipment auction by UK-based Euro Auctions at its expanded Leeds site in England achieved a hammer price of more than €28 million (£24 million). During the three-day auction in Leeds in November, 3,750 lots went under the hammer, bringing the yearly total for the site to more than €208 million (£174 million). India’s road deaths are providing a wider cause for concern. Official data pegs the road fatality rate for the country at over 146,000 in 2015, an increase over the 139,671 recorded in 2014. However there are also thought to be many unreported deaths, so the actual figure could be considerably higher. Work on the La Molina-Miraflores tunnel project looks set to recommence in the second quarter of 2017. The US$500 million project is being managed by Spanish contractor OHL and is one of three major road projects being carried out by the firm in the country, which are worth a total of some $1.5 billion. Mumbai will suffer gridlock in the future unless key measures are taken. That is the conclusion of a new report from the International Transport Forum (ITF). The city could see traffic growth of up to 3000% by 2050 compared with vehicle use for 2015. Argentina is receiving a loans from the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) worth US$300 million for road improvements. The loan will be used to widen and improve roads across the country and is for 25 years with a grace period of 4.5 years. The Argentina Government will provide a further $200 million for road development projects. The German state of Bavaria will invest around €35 million in a road tunnel under the Englischer Garten in Munich. The name of Istanbul’s new 14.6km tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait will be chosen form on-line poll run by the federal transport ministry. The US$1.25 billion tunnel will officially open this month, around eight months ahead of schedule, according to the state-run news agency Anadolu Agency.
