The contract for the first stage of the Corridor 5C project for Bosnia has been signed. This 48km section of Corridor 5 will itself be constructed in four sections and is expected to cost more than €500 million. Funding for these four stages of the Corridor 5 project is being provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Investment Bank (EIB), each of which will fund two stages.

Norway is pushing ahead with a comprehensive plan of road development. The country’s state-owned contractor, Nye Veier, plans to commence work on a series of road projects during 2019. In all these projects will be worth more than €2.3 billion (NOK 22 billion). The plans call for 52km of highways to be constructed, with the Tvedestrand to Arendal link being the first to be buit.

The complete financing for the Autopista al Mar 1 highway project in Colombia has now been secured. Loans of US$713 million from eight banks, seven of which are international institutions, will pay for the PPP project. Firms involved in the project include the Austrian contractor STRABAG and the Spanish firm Sacyr, as well as the local company CONCLAY. The tender process is open for the study into the planned Paso Las Lenas tunnel to connect Chile and Argentina. The study is expected to cost US$1.55 million and will be paid for by Chile’s O’Higgins Region. The tunnel will be some 11.5km long and the portal in Chile will be at an altitude of 2,020m while the entrance on the Argentine side will be at 2,364m, allowing it to be used throughout the year. A new bridge and road connection will be constructed in Cambodia. The bridge will span the Tonle Sap River, and together with the road, this will improve transport connections between Kampong Chhang Province and Kampong Thom Province. The work is expected to cost US$200 million in all, with the road measuring 57km-long and the 3.9km-long bridge crossing three branches of the Tonle Sap River. A new ring road is being built around the city of Bacau in eastern Romania. The project is costing €144 million and will form a section of the Pan-European Corridor IX. Proposals for a second crossing over the Tees River in northern England have gone out to public consultation, according to media reports. The Tees Valley Combined Authority, the local authority, said there are two options to take the A19 trunk road over the River Tees at the city of Middlesbrough. One plan, costing between €235-292 million, would be for a bridge parallel to the existing one where each bridge would traffic in only one directions. New transport infrastructure development plans for Malaysia include projects for three major motorway links. The Works Ministry has set a budget of nearly US$1.3 billion for 20 transport infrastructure projects during 2019. These include constructing three key road links; the Sarawak-Sabah link road, the Pan Borneo Highway, and the Central Spine Road (CSR). Improving Malaysia’s transport infrastructure is intended to help develop the economy by boosting trade, industry and tourism.

Key sections of Indonesia’s important trans-Sumatra highway project are nearly ready for traffic. A 350km stretch that will connect with the city of Palembang should be open shortly. Meanwhile construction of the 141km Bakauheni to Terbanggi Bedar stretch is now starting, with this work being carried out by contractor Hutama Karya. The plans for the 2,765km trans-Sumatra toll road project call for the route to be complete by 2024. This will connect Aceh at the northern end of Sumatra with Lampung on the so
