Tanzania is planning a series of road improvements for its rural roads. A budget of US$172.54 million has been set by the Tanzanian Government and the work will be carried out in the 2021-2022 financial year. This represents a considerable increase from the $118.62 million spent on rural road maintenance and repairs in the 202-2021 financial year..

The programme of work will be managed by the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (Tarura). Repairing roads damaged by flooding will be prioritised as part of the programme and new drainage systems will be installed. Resurfacing work will be carried out on many roads to replace asphalt surfaces damaged by a combination of heavy wear and heavy rainfall.

The improvement works will also help boost transport to neighbouring East African countries; Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique.
