The authorities in Mozambique are evaluating tenders for two key road concessions, worth a total of US$700 million. The first tender is for the 470km N1 road between capital Maputo and Maxixe and the concession will be for the operation and maintenance of this link. The second tender is for the N6 and N7 roads, with the deal again including operation and maintenance. An alliance formed by Portuguese construction firm, 1329 Edifer, and engineering firm, 1330 Tecnovia, has been prequalified to compete for the two road concessions.

Mozambique bridge due to open

Mozambique’s Maputo-Catembe Bridge is due to open shortly and will become Africa’s longest suspension bridge. The 3km bridge will form part of the road connection between Maputo, Mozambique’s capital, and Catembe. The bridge is costing over US$700 million, with much of the necessary funding being provided by the Export Import Bank of China. The new bridge will improve transport and reduce journey times for drivers, who currently have to rely on ferries travelling between Maputo and Catembe.

Mozambique’ new bridge opens to traffic

Mozambique’s new suspension bridge connecting Maputo with Catembe is now open to traffic. The suspension bridge is the longest of its type in Africa, measuring almost 3km-long and surpassing the previous holder of this accolade, the Mapati Bridge in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The new bridge spans Maputo Bay and forms part of a new highway connection running from Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, all the way to the border with South Africa.
