The authorities in Laos are planning a massive road and highway improvement programme. This new strategy from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport calls for a total of 1,151 road improvement projects, which will receive government investment worth US$14 billion. The funding will be used for improving internal road links as well as connections with neighbouring countries. Links across the nation's borders particularly along the North-South and East-West Economic Corridors will also be developed by the nation. The aim is that by 2015 all the current dirt roads leading to remote locations will have been surfaced.
