A key stretch of highway will be upgrade in Peru

Peru's Callejon de Huaylas-Chacas-San Luis road is to be improved and upgraded in a deal worth US$145 million. The road lies in the Ancash region and will be upgraded over a 99km stretch under the plan. The improvement work will be carried out by the Brazilian contractor Odebrecht, which is already active in the Peruvian market. This road upgrade forms part of Peru's plan to boost its transport links and help develop the economy.

Spanish construction firm OHL has secured its first highway works contract in the US state of Texas. The US$142 million contract will see the company renew a 3.2km section of the US-290, which runs through the Lone Star state. Building new bridges, highway resurfacing and drainage improvements are key features of the contract. The work is part of the widening programme for the US-290. The state of Texas has plans to carry out infrastructure projects worth US$5 billion by the end of 2014.

Competition is strong in the tender process for a highway project in Florida. The contract is to design, construct, finance, operate and maintain the interstate I-4 highway and the investment required for the project is expected to exceed US$1.95 billion. The tender is being held by the Florida Department of Transport through a public-private partnership. Work on a key stretch of Colombia’s Ruta del Sol highway project is behind schedule, with the route now unlikely to open to traffic before 2017. The 21.6km section of the highway facing these delays will link Villeta and Guaduas in Cundinamarca. A key challenge is technical as the US engineering firm Gall Zeidler Consultants has warned Colombia’s infrastructure agency (ANI) that this section of the route is geologically unstable.
