An in-depth analysis of crash statistics from Italy shows that road safety is improving in the country, albeit slowly. The number of serious injuries from road crashes also dropped 2.7% compared with the figures for 2013, to 251,147 in 2014.
The most serious crashes were on non-urban roads, with an average of 4.63 killed/100 crashes. On urban roads the average was 1.13 killed/100 crashes, while on major highways the average was 3.14 killed/100 crashes.
The number of road deaths on highways fell 10.6% compared with the data for 2013 and by 3.8% for non-urban roads. However the number for those killed in crashes on urban roads rose by 5.4%.
