Up to €70 billion may be required to develop Italy’s toll road network according to expert estimates from industry. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is determining the investment required to maintain, upgrade and develop the toll road network in Italy.
There will be further analysis of the existing concessions and whether these can be extended.
Key upgrades to the network would include works to improve the routes around the major cities of Bologna and Genoa. Both cities are crucial to Italy’s GDP, with the former being a centre for manufacturing and the latter being a prime port, and traffic congestion is a key issue in these areas.
Addressing the peak time traffic woes for Bologna and Genoa could cost as much as €19.3 billion according to estimates.
