IRF releases World Road Statistics (WRS), containing road data covering the period 2002-2007

The WRS 2009 includes high quality road and transport statistics for more than 185 countries, which have been compiled from a wide range of national, international and intergovernmental sources, including Road Administrations:

  • 2788 United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE),
  • 3683 United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA),
  • 2332 World Bank,
  • 3684 International Monetary Fund,
  • 1612 International Energy Agency,
  • 1586 African Development Bank,
  • 943 Asian Development Bank,
  • 3685 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development,
  • 1614 Central Intelligence Agency,
  • 1615 Eurostat
  • 1617 European Conference of Ministers of Transport.

IRF has been publishing the WRS every year since 1964. It remains the only comprehensive guide of its kind containing international road, traffic and transport data. This essential reference publication also provides a number of important Sustainable Development Indicators and other data relevant to development and aid institutions, as well as to international organisations, funding agencies and United Nations divisions. It has been adopted as a source by lead agencies such as the United Nations Development Programme and the World Bank, which uses the WRS as the basis for part of its own publication, World Development Indicators.

2462 IRF is especially proud of the 2009 edition, which, in keeping with the its long-term commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, has been published as a CD-ROM, with only a small accompanying booklet. The CD-ROM contains detailed statistical reports and tables in PDF and 2794 Microsoft Excel formats, while the booklet is limited to an executive selection of key figures, maps, charts and graphs.

Following a first introductory section giving detailed country profiles and key indicators with respect to each, the WRS is divided into eight additional sections covering respectively Road Networks; Road Traffic; Multimodal Traffic Comparisons; Vehicles in Use; Road Accidents; Production, Imports, First Registrations and Exports of Motor Vehicles; Road Expenditures; and Energy. A comprehensive appendix provides a web resources directory and specific country and regional references.

IRF offers various licence agreements for institutions, academic research bodies and such like that would be interested in purchasing the WRS for multi-users within the organisation as a whole.
