According to the Office of the Auditor General of Norway, despite more road maintenance, highways are no safer nor more environmentally friendly than before.

The report from the Riksrevisjonen said maintenance of the country's roads has increased significantly in the past few years but improvements have been few and far between.

The report also states that the number of fatal accidents caused by maintenance and operation of roads between 2017-2021 amounted to 30% of all fatal road accidents in Norway.

The cost of road maintenance has risen.
