Latvia’s road network is in major need of improvements. The country’s Ministry of Transport is setting out a programme of maintenance works to improve the road system. However, additional funding will be required to meet the targets set.
Regional and local roads have to be improved and an extra €563 million will be required for the programme to go ahead as planned. Surveys carried out in 2021 showed that 26% of Latvia’s asphalt surfaced regional roads were in need of improvements. In addition, 51.4% of gravel surfaced regional roads were in need of work, according to the survey. Local roads were in an even worse condition according to the survey, with 31.2% of asphalt surfaced links and 54.4% of gravel surfaced links requiring significant improvements.
