Extensive Japanese bridge improvements are needed.
Extensive improvements are required to bridges right across Japan, according to official data from the Japanese Government. The report reveals that 32% of the 41,395 bridges managed by Japan’s local authorities are in need of upgrades and improvements.
The bridges were supposed to have been improved between 2014 and 2018. But much of the work remains to be carried out due to insufficiencies in sourcing funding and trained personnel. Some work has been carried out to around 52% of bridges needing upgrades. A further 16% of bridges are undergoing work at present and a number of dangerous structures have been closed to traffic.
