China’s Anhui and Jiangsu Provinces are developing transport infrastructure with a series of major projects. In Anhui Province plans have been drawn up for road and highway improvements as well as upgrades to other categories of transport infrastructure over the period from 2017 to 2021. The road expansion programme will see Anhui Province increase its highway network by 1,157km to 5,700km during this period.

Meanwhile Jiangsu Province has set a budget of nearly US$15 billion to upgrade road, rail and airport links during 2017. This plan includes 14 highway projects, with six of these being ongoing projects. Within the 14 highway projects, a further five will be for all-new highway links. Two of the new highways will be ready for use in 2020 and will measure 34km and 18km. Another three highway routes measuring 10km, 33km and 45km will be completed by 2021. The plans also call for the construction and upgrading of 3,500km of rural roads and work on 800 bridges.
