Major roadworks within Mohammed Bin Zayed City are among recently announced projects, including electricity, street-lighting and storm-water drainage systems, to be funded by more than US$128 million.
The projects covered by the funding were announced by Abu Dhabi officials in the United Arab Emirates.
Earlier this year, the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai awarded contracts worth $131 million for a series of road, bridge, crossing and tunnel upgrades. The projects include a new flyover, a signalised at-grade junction, an intersection improvement, new key surface roads and improved service roads. All of the projects are scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2018.
Meanwhile, road safety is improving in the UAE, according to official data released the Traffic Coordination General at the Interior Ministry. Between January and October last year deaths on the UAE’s roads dropped 4.9% while serious injuries fell by 5.1%.
The number of deaths was 560, compared with 589 for the same period in 2014. The total number of injuries registered in the period was 5,605, compared to 5,909. The number of traffic crashes reported in the January to October 2015 declined 3% from 4,058 in the same period in 2014, to 3,935.
The major cause of crashes was from sudden swerving, accounting for 19.44% of the total number of incidents. Failure to maintain a safe distance between vehicles came in second and resulted in 13% of crashes.
