India’s federal government has sanctioned the construction or upgrading of 2,500km of national level roads in Telangana state.
Work should include another ring road around the capital Hyderabad, according to a report in the Times of India newspaper.
The head of the state government, chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, said state planning officials will need to come up with a detailed forward plan for transportation in the new state. Rao has held office since Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh state in June 2014, becoming India’s 29th state.
Rao later told the newspaper Hans India that he sees more road and bridge contracts signed under the ‘build-operate-transfer’ model.
The inland city of Hyderabad, with a population of nearly 7 million, was the capital of Andhra Pradesh before the creation of Telangana. The city of nearly 7 million will remain a shared capital between the two states until 2025 when Andhra Pradesh will designate another city as its capital.
A survey in 2012 found that more that of the more than 3.5 million vehicles operating in the city, 74% were two-wheelers, 15% cars and 3% three-wheelers. The remaining 8% included buses, goods vehicles and taxis. Around 80% of passengers and 60% of freight were transported by road.
Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road, Outer Ring Road – officially called the Nehru Outer Ring Road - is a 158km 8-lane expressway. The first section opened in 2008 and some work continues today.
The Hyderabad Elevated Expressway, the longest flyover in India, refers to two highways. The first is the11.6km P.V. Narasimha Rao Elevated Expressway connecting the Hyderabad International Airport with Mehdipatnam. It was opened in 2009. The second is the still only proposed 30-km expressway from Parade Grounds to Shamirpet.
