Goahead for Bacau-Piatra Neamt expressway

The design and construction will be awarded as a single contract, the first of its kind in Romania.

Romania has given the green light for the construction of the 51km Bacau-Piatra Neamt express road.

The National Road Investment Company (CNIR) can now start the procurement process for design and construction of the expressway which is expected to cost around €1.8 billion.

The newspaper also noted that the design and construction will be awarded as a single contract, the first of its kind in the country.

The contract is expected to be 48 months, of which 10 months will be for the design and 38 months for construction, according to a report in the economic and political newspaper Bursa.

Work will include seven bridges, five road interchanges and a maintenance and coordination centre.

Bacau, a city of around 140,000, is 300km north of the capital Bucharest.

Meanwhile, Piatra Neamt is a city of around 90,000 nestled in the Carpathian mountains and is a tourist destination.
