Turkish road safety improved for 2019, with fewer casualties than 2018.

Turkey saw an improvement in road safety for 2019. There were over 5,500 fatalities from road crashes in Turkey 2019. This was a notable drop from the 6,700 fatalities from road crashes in Turkey during 2018.

Overall road safety has improved in the country in recent years. Turkey’s figure for annual road deaths hit a peak of 7,500 in 2015.

The actual number of crashes on Turkey’s road network has also fallen. There were 1.2 million crashes on Turkish roads in 2018 and this dropped slightly to 1.17 million for 2019.

Drivers accounted for 43% of the road deaths, with vehicle passengers accounting for 34%. Pedestrians meanwhile accounted for 13% of the road deaths in Turkey during 2019.

Driver error was the biggest single cause of road crashes in Turkey during 2019, accounting for 88% of incidents.
