New data from France shows an improvement in road safety during 2021. According to the data from Sécurité Routière, there were 2,947 road deaths in 2021. This represents a drop of 9% compared to the figure for 2019.
While the road death rate in France for 2020 was just 2,550, this figure was exceptionally low due to the drop in traffic levels because of measures introduced to address the COVID 19 pandemic.
France is seeing steady gains in road safety over time. Tough enforcement measures into DUI and speeding have had a positive effect on reducing the road casualty rate in France.
The number of motor vehicle occupants and powered two wheeler users killed in road crashes in 2021 dropped when compared with 2019 to 1,411 and 670 respectively. However, there was an increase of 39 deaths of cyclists killed compared with 2019, with the figure reaching 226. There were 22 deaths of electric scooter riders in 2021, compared with just 10 in 2019.
