Peru is facing a serious road safety problem, with official data showing that there were 3,138 fatalities in 87,172 crashes during 2023. The country has an estimated population of 34.35 million and the rate of road deaths is a serious cause for concern.

According to the data from the Statistics Division of the Department of Information Technology and Communications of the National Police of Peru, there were also 58,082 people injured in road crashes. Powered two wheelers, cars and small vans were involved in 39% of the crashes.

Peru’s Association of Victims of Traffic Accidents is calling for tougher enforcement in a bid to tackle the problem.
